IT WAS ESTABLISHED BY CONGRESS THROUGH THE VICTIMS OF trafficking AND VIOLENCE protection ACT IN October 2000.

VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN ACT (VAWA)- ABUSED SPOUSES, CHILDREN, AND PARENTS UNDER THE VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN ACT (VAWA), noncitizenS WHO HAVE SUFFERED ABUSE FROM THEIR U.S. CITIZEN OR LAWFUL permanent RESIDENT RELATIVES CAN independently petition FOR IMMIGRANT classification WITHOUT THE ABUSER'S INVOLVEMENT. THIS PROVISION EMPOWERS VICTIMS TO SEEK SAFETY AND INDEPENDENCE.
